The demise of a 40-year old opera singer, Chu Lanlan last month, came as a shock to a lot, considering how young she was.

Her family did not disclose any detail of her death, but said they were saddened by her “abrupt departure”.

China relaxed its zero-Covid policy in December and since then, there has been a huge increase in infections and death, with reports saying hospitals are overwhelmed in the Asian country as a result of high covid-related cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Wednesday that China was under-representing the true impact of Covid in the country, particularly in deaths.

The deaths of Chu Lanlan alongside others is raising speculation about more losses than those reported on official counts.

The death of actor Gong Jintang on New Year’s day shocked many Chinese internet users.

The cause of Gong’s death is not yet ascertained.

According to Operawire:

Chinese soprano Chu Lanlan has died at the age of 39 of COVID-19 complications.

Lanlan was a renowned young performing artist of Beijing Opera and was the founder and leader of I Beijing Opera as well as the teacher at Beijing Opera and Art’s College. She was also the head of Lanxin Troupe, a team committed to I Beijing Opera.
