Diaz curled a beautiful finish straight into the top corner to hand Los Blancos the victory on Tuesday night.
The Spanish midfielder started the encounter in place of Englishman, Jude Bellingham, who was out of action due to injury.
The second leg will take place on 6 March at Santiago Bernabeu.
