The Spaniard added, “it’s football. It’s not about disappointment, it’s football, it happens”.

Real Madrid knocked out Manchester City from the Uefa Champions League 2023/24 at the quarter final stage.

The Spanish giants won 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the quarter final.

Both sides shared points in the first leg of the tie after a 3-3 draw at Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain.

According to mancity.com, in his post-match comments, Guardiola said: “It’s not the first time it happened in my life in the Champions League.

“[Bayern Munich] shot 35 shots against Chelsea with Roberto Di Matteo with Chelsea and I lost.

“We played incredibly well with Bayern Munich in a semi-final against Atletico Madrid, and we lost, it’s football. It’s not about disappointment, it’s football, it happens.

“If you do who you are, what else? We are sad of course. We want to continue, we will try to qualify for Champions League next season and we will try to do it.

“When they have done what we have done. We did everything but it was not possible because they were incredible in defence with solidarity and the amount of talent they have, it doesn’t matter.

“They defended for a long, long, long time. Chapeau. I think my team is not able to do this. If we had to defend a lot of minutes in our box, we are not good, we could not do it.

“They are able to do it, big credit to them. Next time, if it happens what can we do to create more shots? 60? That’s all we can do.

“The players did everything. It happened three days before against Luton, in Madrid, at Crystal Palace. The team is always there.

“I’m so proud. I’d love to be there in the Champions League, unfortunately we are not.”
