Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi’s early opener helped Coventry City to a comfortable 4-2 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the round two (2) of the EFL Cup 2026/27 on Tuesday 25 August, 2026 at Home Park.
It was a scare for the Premier League newly promoted side as the home side came back to level 2-2 on home soil before two (2) goals in eleven (11) minutes ensured the Sky Blues scaled through to the next round.
Awoniyi, who joined Coventry City from Nottingham Forest, opened the scoring for Frank Lampard’s side in the 3rd minute, and, in the 5th minute, Jack Rudoni, added the second.
But, Plymouth Argyle fought back and equalized through Danny Irow and Xavier Amaechi in the 21st and 54th minutes respectively.
Ephron Mason-Clark, second half substitute, netted the third goal for the visitors in the 67th minute, and Victor Torp sealed the win for Coventry City in the 78th minute from the penalty spot.
Torp handed the Sky Blues some sigh of relief by converting a penalty after a foul by substitute Joe Edwards on Brandon Thomas-Asante, who could have added to City’s lead in stoppage time but hammered his volley over from the edge of the six-yard box.
