State officials revealed on Saturday, at least, six (6) people have died in a forceful storm system that struck into Indiana this week as intense flooding continue to overwhelm communities and stretch emergency services across the State.
Obscure floodwater engulfed streets and encircled structures in the neighbourhood of Ravenswood, Indianapolis on Saturday, sinking cars and rising to front door levels.
Governor of Indiana, Mike Braun, said, he spoke with President Donald Trump and that an expedited FEMA emergency declaration was in process.
Taking to X, Braun expressed his gratitude to Trump for his “commitment” to bringing the Federal assistance to the Hoosiers.
Governor Braun said: “I spoke with President Trump today about the severe storms and historic flooding impacting Indiana, and he informed me that he intends to approve our request for a Presidential Emergency Declaration.
“I’m grateful to President Trump for his commitment to getting Hoosiers the federal assistance we need as we continue responding and recovering.”
He assured, as Indiana continues to battle, “I will continue to do everything in my power to protect Hoosier lives and livelihoods”.
On those who have lost their lives to the disaster, the Governor expressed his condolences, saying, “My heart goes out to every Hoosier impacted by these storms”.
Braun added: “Hoosiers can be confident that we are working around the clock to keep people safe and help our communities recover.”
In Indianapolis, Braun said, the floodwaters have moved downstream in the city from areas that had between 6 and nearly 12 inches of rain.
Over ninety (90) people alongside their pets were rescued as floodwaters heightened along the White River in Indianapolis, and authorities responding to what many described as historic flooding.
So far, the destruction was more along the river corridor, from Hamilton County into the northern Indianapolis suburbs. Farther east, in Delaware County; Sheriff’s Deputies discovered the body of a 58-year old woman on Friday.
It is believed the woman died after making attempt to drive through the floodwaters.
Speaking to the Associated Press, Director of Marion County Emergency Management, Jacob Spence: “This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime type floods.
“So yeah, this is an unprecedented event and unfortunately we’re setting some new records.”
