After carrying out an inspection tour of flood-affected areas in Uyo, Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has said, buildings blocking natural waterways will be “removed”.
However, via X on Sunday, Eno assured the government stands ready to “engage and compensate” where necessary.
He explained, the removal of the buildings will give way for the “free flow of stormwater”.
Governor Eno said: “After inspecting flood-affected areas in Uyo, I gave relevant ministries, agencies, consultants and contractors one week to review the State’s drainage master plan and present immediate and long-term solutions.
“Buildings blocking natural waterways will be removed, with proper engagement and compensation where necessary, to allow the free flow of stormwater.”
He expressed his sympathy with the residents affected by the flood, and thanked the Deputy Governor alongside the emergency response team for their “prompt” intervention.
He called on residents to ensure drains and waterways are “free of refuse”.
Governor Eno added: “I sympathise with affected residents and appreciate the Deputy Governor, the emergency response team, and the contractors for their prompt intervention. I also urge everyone to keep drains and waterways free of refuse.”
