‘They never stopped believing’ – President Faye reacts after Senegal got whipped 1-3 by France

Bassirou Diomaye Faye, President of Senegal, has come out to react to the 3-1 loss slammed on the Lions of Teranga by France on Tuesday night.

The Senegalese President described the clash as “fiercely contested”, and said, Senegal “never stopped believing”.

On Tuesday 16 June, 2026, France discomfited Senegal by three (3) goals to one (1) in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I opener at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, New York City.

Taking to X, Faye said, the West African side “bowed out” to the Les Parisiens, and described the World Cup as a “marathon”. He said, the Lions of Teranga have all they need to “bounce back” as they recover from the whipping for their next preliminaries.

In his reaction, President Faye said: “Our Lions bow out to France in their World Cup opener, at the end of a fiercely contested match where they never stopped believing.

“A World Cup is a marathon, and this group has the resources to bounce back. The Nation remains fully by your side.”

France were amazing in the second 45 minutes of the game against Senegal after a tight first half, with the European side recording just one (1) shot despite featuring a strong attack.

President Faye further reacted: “On to the next match, with the same hunger and the same faith. Go Lions!”
