Peter Obi, 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), met with Thabo Mbeki, former President of South Africa, in Cape Town.
The meeting was Obi’s final engagement before leaving the Port City on the Southwest Coast of the country. He also met former President of Botswana, Ian Khama, before leaving for Johannesburg.
The former Governor of Anambra State made known via X, meeting both former Leaders was an “opportunity” for him to express gratitude to them for making “positive comments” on the recent issues that concern immigration within the region, as well as, their non-stop backing for “peace and unity” among nations in Africa.
Obi said: “My final engagement before leaving Capetown for Johannesburg yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting two distinguished former leaders, President Ian Khama of Botswana and President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa, before departing Cape Town for Johannesburg yesterday.
“This meeting was an opportunity for me to express my heartfelt appreciation for their positive comments on the recent immigration issues in the region and their continued advocacy for peace and unity among African nations.”
The former Labour Party (LP) member said, both former Presidents remain highly respected across Africa as a result of their “remarkable contributions” both during and after their tenures as Presidents.
Obi also reunited with his “good” friend, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, former Ekiti State Governor, whose speech at the Thabo Mbeki Africa Day lecture focused on “rebuilding unity” in Africa.
The Thabo Mbeki Africa Day lecture was put together by the Thabo Mbeki Foundation in Cape Town.
Obi further said: “Both Mr Khama and Mr Mbeki continue to hold significant respect across the continent due to their remarkable contributions, both during and after their presidencies.
“During my audience with Mr Mbeki, I also reconnected with my good friend, former Ekiti State Governor Dr Kayode Fayemi, who delivered a keynote address at the Thabo Mbeki Africa Day lecture, focusing on the themes of rebuilding unity and revitalising institutions throughout the continent.”
