Kobbie Mainoo’s winner sealed a dramatic 3-2 victory over rivals Liverpool in the Premier League match on Sunday 3 May, 2026 at Old Trafford.
The result means Manchester United have clinched a spot in next season’s Uefa Champions League after being absent for two (2) years.
Michael Carrick’s United kicked off to a beautiful start as Matheus Cunha opened the scoring very early, in the 6th minute, and Benjamin Sesko doubled the lead in the 14th minute.
But, the Reds kept on fighting and pulled one back through Dominik Szoboszlai in the 47th minute after Amad Diallo gave the ball away on the halfway line.
In the 56th minute, Szoboszlai provided for Dutch forward, Cody Gakpo, who levelled for Liverpool. The visitors’ leveller came after United goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, passed the ball straight to Alexis Mac Allister, and Gakpo slotted into the open net.
It was Liverpool who pressed for a large part of the showdown, however, it was Manchester United who got the winner through England midfielder, Mainoo, in the 77th minute; Mainoo struck from the edge of the 18-yard box to ignite wild celebrations at the Theatre of Dreams.
With three (3) games remaining, the outcome moved third-placed Manchester United to sixty-four (64) points, while Liverpool, who are placed on the fourth spot, still have some work to do earn a place in Europe’s elite next season. Arne Slot’s Reds are level on 58 points with fifth-placed Aston Villa, who have a game unplayed.
Aston Villa will face Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently in the red zone, in the Premier League match at Villa Park on Sunday 3 May, 2026 at 19:00 (WAT).
Following Mainoo’s outstanding performance against Liverpool, Manchester United posted on X: “MAN. OF. THE. MOMENT.”
