Former Guber candidate dumps APC, joins ADC

Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, former Deputy Governor of Kano State and former Gubernatorial candidate under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has detected from the ‘Broom’ Party and joined the family of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Kwankwaso made the announcement on Tuesday 31 March, 2026, few days after the former Minister of Defence dumped the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and joined the Coalition Party.

Making his speech before a “massive” crowd of supporters, the former Governor of Kano State described Gawuna’s defection as a “monumental and inspiring” decision that indicates a “larger movement” as more top political figures join the Coalition.

Kwankwaso announced: “Today, we proudly welcomed Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, former Kano Deputy Governor and APC gubernatorial candidate, into the ADC family.

“Speaking before a massive crowd at his Gawuna Ward, I described his defection as a monumental and inspiring development — one that signals the beginning of a larger movement as more prominent figures join our cause.”

Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna became the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2023 Kano State gubernatorial election.

He served from 2018 to 2023 as Deputy Governor of Kano State under Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Ganduje also served as National Chairman of the APC from 2023 to 2025.

Kwankwaso seized the opportunity to send a stern warning to those who intend to “disrupt” the forthcoming elections that, they will be “strongly and resolutely” resisted.

He said: “I also seized the moment to issue a clear warning to those planning to disrupt the upcoming electoral process: any attempt to manipulate or undermine the will of the people will be met with strong and resolute resistance.”
