Premier League side, Chelsea, fell to a crushing 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germaine (PSG) in the Uefa Champions League 2025/26 round of 16 first leg match on Wednesday 11 March, 2026 at Parc des Princes in Paris, France.
Chelsea withstood PSG, who are Champions League defending champions, for large part of the showdown and twice emerged from the back to level.
However, a mistake from Blues goalkeeper, Filip Jorgensen, made way for midfielder, Vitinha, to find the back of the net in the 74th minute, a goal that led to the fall of Chelsea and leaving them with a mountain to climb when both sides lock horns in the second leg in England next week.
Also, Vitinha’s goal opened the door for Georgian winger, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s brace.
The Les Parisiens were under pressure heading into the game after falling to AS Monaco in the French Ligue 1 match on Friday with some players being scrutinized for not being in their best this campaign.
PSG went in front in the 10th minute through Bradley Barcola after J. Neves had provided, but, in the 28th minute, the visitors responded with a leveller when Malo Gusto converted Enzo Fernandez’ assist; the Blues lacked good finishing for most of the time, however, they deserved to level.
And, five (5) minutes before half time, the hosts reclaimed the lead through Ousmane Dembele; the Frenchman manoeuvred through Wesley Fofana at the top of the box before shooting past Jorgensen.
From a Pedro Neto assist, Argentine midfielder, Fernandez, levelled for Chelsea in the 57th minute with a confident finish.
The English side were doing well until goalie Jorgensen’s mistake, which allowed Vitinha to bring PSG back in front with the third, and from there it all went in favour of the home side.
Jorgensen’s pass out from the back was intercepted by Barcola, who found Kvaratskhelia, who then released for Vitinha, who chipped over the Denmark international.
Then, two beautiful strikes from Kvaratskhelia ensured any hopes of a comeback from the visitors was totally struck out.
The first goal from Georgia international in the 86th minute was a powerful hit from distance and the second, the fifth for PSG in the 4th minute of additional time, was from close range.
Kvaratskhelia’s second came after a goal from the hosts had been ruled out for offside by Video Assistant Referee (VAR), a goal as a result of another mistake from Jorgensen.
Liam Rosenior’s post-defeat comments
Chelsea head coach, Liam Rosenior, at his post-PSG press conference, told TNT Sports: “We didn’t react well to a setback. At 3-2 we are in the tie. Then Kvaratskhelia scores an unbelievable strike and that happens. At this level, there are quality of players on both sides.
“The fifth goal is after a flashpoint. We don’t keep our heads in that moment, we don’t keep our cool. They break our press and score a fifth goal. It makes it very difficult to come back from but it’s not impossible.”
