‘Who to marry’: Biden celebrates signing Respect For Marriage Act into law

Today, Sunday 14 December, 2025, 46th President of the United States (US), Joe Biden, celebrates signing the Respect For Marriage Act into law three (3) years ago.

Biden described marriage as a “simple proposition”, saying, to decide “whether to marry, who to marry” is one of the “most profound decision a person can make”.

According to Congress.gov:

“The Respect For Marriage Act provides statutory authority for same-sex and interracial marriages.

“Specifically, the act replaces provisions that define, for purposes of federal law, marriage as between a man and a woman and spouse as a person of the opposite sex with provisions that recognize any marriage between two individuals that is valid under state law.

“The act also replaces provisions that do not require states to recognize same-sex marriages from other states with provisions that prohibit the denial of full faith and credit or any right or claim relating to out-of-state marriages on the basis of sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin.

“The act allows the Department of Justice to bring a civil action and establishes a private right of action for violations.

“The act does not (1) affect religious liberties or conscience protections that are available under the Constitution or federal law, (2) require religious organizations to provide goods or services to formally recognize or celebrate a marriage.”

Joe Biden posted on X: “Three years ago, I was proud to sign the Respect for Marriage Act into law. Deciding whether to marry, and who to marry, is one of the most profound decisions a person can make. Marriage is a simple proposition: who do you love, and will you be loyal to the person you love? It’s not more complicated than that.

“Today, we celebrate the courage of all who made that day possible. It’s that kind of progress that gives us hope that, with every generation, we will continue our journey toward a more perfect union.”

Biden served only one term as President of the United States (US) from 2021 to 2025; the Democratic Party replaced him with his Vice, Kamala Harris, who ran for the Office of the President against Donald Trump of the Republican Party in the US Presidential Election that held on 5 November, 2024, but, lost.
