Governor of the State of California, Gavin Newsom, has reacted after “the President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor.”
Governor Newsom has suffered heavy criticism from President Donald Trump following the ongoing riots in the city of Los Angeles, California.
The demonstrations which started last Friday were set to spread across the country as activists planned demonstrations in New York, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta and other cities.
Following the call by President Trump for the arrest of a “sitting Governor”, 52nd Speaker of the US House, Nancy Pelosi, said, “this is a hallmark of authoritarianism on the road to tyranny”.
Pelosi continued: “The American people must be able to exercise their Constitutional right to lawfully and peacefully protest. It is essential that we shine a bright light on the unlawful tactics of the Trump Administration so that freedom of speech prevails.”
Newsom said, “This is a day I hoped I would never see in America.”
People in their dozens have been arrested in Los Angeles after days of violent protests, which ignited following immigration raids.
US President Donald Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to the Los Angeles, causing outrage from Democrats. Then on Monday 9 June , 2025, he ordered additional 2,000 troops and 700 marines to deploy to the city, also.
People started converging after federal immigration officers apprehended large groups of illegal immigrants in areas with large Latino populations.
The demonstrations started peacefully, some self-serving cars were torched, and a major highway was closed by protesters over the weekend before the unrest began to calm later on Monday.
Governor Gavin Newsom wrote: “The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor.
“This is a day I hoped I would never see in America.
“I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican this is a line we cannot cross as a nation — this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”
President Trump had called for Governor Newsom and Mauor Bass to apologize to the people of California following the ongoing riots in Los Angeles.
