The United Nations General Assembly designated 11 December “International Mountain Day”. As of 2003, it has been observed every year to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world.
Okonjo-Iweala wrote: “Today is International Mountain Day according to UNGA Resolution #57/245. The day is designed to remind us of the crucial role mountains play in our planets future. It is up to us to honour that important role and ensure the next generations inherit a clean world! Congratulations to the Permanent Misdion of the Kyrgyz Republic and all those who have organized to celebrate this day!!”
