For the first time in history, the World Cup 2026 will feature 48 teams, with FIFA choosing to expand the 32-team tournament format that has been in place since the 1998 edition.
That means more international teams than ever will gather in the United States (US), Canada and Mexico to fight for the trophy.
UEFA, CAF, AFC, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF and OFC have 16, 9, 8, 6, 6, and 1 spots respectively in the tournament, the remaining two places will be decided through the intercontinental playoffs.
