FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualification: Nigeria 1-1 Zimbabwe – ‘Our team demonstrated true Nigerian spirit of resilience and dedication’ against The Warriors – Peter Obi

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has expressed “delight” after watching Nigeria being held by Zimbabwe in the FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday evening.

Obi said, “the Super Eagles is always a delight to watch.”

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held 1-1 by The Warriors of Zimbabwe in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Tuesday 25 March, 2025.

Victor Osimhen scored for Eric Chelle’s side in the 74th minute, before the visitors shocked Nigeria with the leveller in the 90th minute through Chirewa, forcing the Super Eagles’ hopes to the World Cup to fade.

Obi, who travelled to Uyo, where he joined a host of other sport-enthusiastic Nigerians to support The Super Eagles, hailed the team, saying, “our team demonstrated the true Nigerian spirit of strength, resilience and dedication on the field of play.”

In his post-match comments, Obi wrote: “Our national football team – The Super Eagles is always a delight to watch.

“Yesterday, I travelled to Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital, where I joined a host of other sport-enthusiastic Nigerians to support The Super Eagles as they played the Warriors of Zimbabwe in their sixth match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

“As usual, our team demonstrated the true Nigerian spirit of strength, resilience and dedication on the field of play. Football, and indeed sports, has remained a strong unifying factor for our nation battling with disunity. While we may not have clinched the victory on the field of play, our dear players have, again, won our hearts with their obvious display of sportsmanship.

“I sincerely appreciate our dear national football team and, indeed, everyone whose efforts and sacrifices got us far in this journey. Our labours were not in vain.

“A New Nigeria and a New Africa are POssible.”

HC: Despite possessing lethal players, Nigeria is still struggling to clinch victory comfortably. What’s the problem?
