Insecurity in Nigeria ‘worsening’ – Obi reacts to abduction of ’20’ NYSC members

Taking to X to bare his mind following the abduction of “20” members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Peter Obi said, “insecurity must not be a norm” in the country.

“Approximately 20” Youth Corps members were abducted on the way to their Orientation Camp; an unfortunate incident the 2027 Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) described as “distressing”, and said, it has exposed the “worsening” insecurity in Nigeria.

Obi reacted: “The abduction of approximately 20 prospective NYSC members travelling to their orientation camp is yet another distressing indication of the worsening insecurity in our country.”

The former Governor of Anambra State reminded the government its “foremost” duty, which is to “protect lives and property”; he said, the rate at which families express fear over their loved ones being kidnapped is on the “increase”.

He said: “These young Nigerians were preparing to serve their nation, but they were unable to travel safely on our roads. Families are increasingly burdened by the fear that their loved ones could fall victim to kidnapping.”

The former Labour Party (LP) member said, insecurity should be met with all seriousness and not taken as an “ordinary occurrence”.

He called on the “immediate and safe” rescue of all Corps members abducted, as well as, the apprehension of those behind the abduction; adding, Nigeria “must” become a place where young people can thrive without “fear”.

Obi said: “I call for the immediate and safe rescue of all the abducted corps members and the arrest of those responsible. Nigeria must become a country where young people can travel, work, and serve their nation without fear.”
