France 3-0 Sweden: World Cup 2026 favourites reach round of 16, Mbappe net historic brace

France eased through Sweden 3-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match on Tuesday 30 June, 2026 at New York New Jersey Stadium, East Rutherford, New York, United States (US), thanks to a double from Real Madrid forward, Kylian Mbappe.

France and Spain are regarded as tournament favourites, however, the Les Bleus have proved they are more convincing of the two (2) after emerging winner in all three (3) Group I encounters.

Coach Didier Deschamps guided France to 3-1, 3-0 and 4-1 victories over Senegal, Iraq and Norway respectively.

Sweden concluded Group F on the third spot after amassing four (4) points, behind Netherlands and Japan. The Blue and Yellow defeated Tunisia 5-1, lost to Netherlands 1-5 and drew 1-1 against Japan.

Netherlands and Japan were knocked out of the World Cup 2026 on Monday by Morocco and Brazil respectively.

Paris Saint-Germaine (PSG) forward, Ousmane Dembele, provided for Mbappe, who opened the scoring for France in the 45th minute.

And, Bayern Munich winger, Michael Olise, assisted Bradley Barcola, who added the second in the 53rd minute; Olise, once again assisted Mbappe in the 74th minute to seal the win for the Les Bleus and progress to the last 16.

Mbappe’s brace was historic as it helped the former PSG forward climb past Germany’s Miroslav Klose in World Cup goals scored. So far, Mbappe has seventeen (17) goals in the World Cup, one (1) more than the German striker.

The temperature soared in New Jersey, reaching more than 35 degrees, but, it was France’ jaw-dropping performance that left the finest impression as Olise was extremely creative for the two-time World Cup winners as his double assists helped France cruise on Tuesday night.

France’ win against Sweden was a statement to rivals who have eyes on the trophy as they March forward with their quest for a third World Cup glory with their fourth back-to-back win in the tournament on Tuesday.
