As moves towards a Moon base continues, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has made known, it will announce the Artemis III astronauts on Tuesday 9 June, 2027.
The Artemis III mission has a current date for launch which is late 2027.
The next astronauts to journey toward the Moon will move in the footsteps of the Artemis II crew.
The Artemis II astronauts made history as the first crew to fly around the dark side of the Moon.
Astronauts of Artemis II, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, climbed to fame on their historic mission on a consistent stream of live updates, photos and viral moments.
NASA announced on X: “Tomorrow, we’re announcing the astronauts flying aboard Artemis III, the mission that will test rendezvous and docking capabilities with commercial lunar landers in low Earth orbit.”
Artemis II, the first journey around the moon since the 1970s, made use of advanced technology to keep astronauts more connected with those on Planet Earth, and, made available to the public a closer view of what happens in space.
While Artemis II journeyed around the Moon, Artemis III is set to carry out tests with one or both lunar landers in Earth’s Orbit.
The four-astronaut crew will travel to Earth’s orbit in the Orion Spacecraft.
The Starship HLS of SpaceX and Blue Moon Landers of Blue Origin, have been developed as part of NASA’s commercial partnerships and will test rendezvous and docking operations.
Plan for a Lunar Base
The target of the Artemis mission is to reestablish a human presence on the Moon and eventually establish a Lunar Base that can support long-term habitation of humans.
A Base on the Moon would be an important springboard point for crewed exploration of deeper space, encompassing the ambition of putting humans on Planet Mars.
