The State of Israel has recorded medical breakthrough as 8-month-old baby become the first in the world to receive an experimental gene therapy.
The treatment was conducted at Clalit-Schneider Children’s Medical Center, according to Israel via X.
The therapy was delivered straight into the brain to correct a “devastating generic disorder”.
Israel posted: “Medical breakthrough in Israel:
“An 8-month-old baby became the first person in the world to receive an experimental gene therapy delivered directly into the brain to treat a devastating genetic disorder.”
The treatment was carried out by a combination of Jewish and Arab Israeli medical professionals.
Israel further posted: “The pioneering treatment, carried out at Clalit-Schneider Children’s Medical Center, was the result of an extraordinary collaboration between Jewish and Arab Israeli medical professionals, researchers, and biotech innovators.
“A remarkable story of innovation, cooperation, and hope.”
The treatment is a major milestone in the development of precision genetic therapies for rare neurological disorders.
The family didn’t want to allow a photo or to disclose their names or the gender of the baby.
According to The Jerusalem Post:
There have been only 60 to 90 genetically confirmed cases identified worldwide in medical literature until now, making it an “ultra-orphan disease.”
The breakthrough treatment is coming following years of research led by Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI) scientist Prof. Rami Aqeilan.
He said: “This moment represents the culmination of many years of basic and translational research.
“What began as an effort to understand the biological function of a gene has evolved into a potential therapeutic strategy for children affected by one of the most severe forms of genetic epilepsy.”
