Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, has called for unity to achieve the “new Nigeria” dream.
He made the call when he attended a meeting with the AfricanDemocratic Congress (ADC), and the Obidient Movement on Saturday 7 February, 2026 in Asaba, Delta State.
On X, Obi stressed the need to converge as “one family” to fight towards a “common” goal, which is to create a “United and new Nigeria”, he says is “achievable”.
Making his speech at the meeting, the former Labour Party member said, the Nigeria of today is a country that needs “unity”; he said, Nigerians must unite for the “shared purpose” of installing “competent leadership” that has the qualities necessary to bring about “good governance”.
He added, the leadership must make a priority the tackling of serious problems that confront Nigeria as a country, such as, “security, poverty and hunger”.
Obi said: “Yesterday, Saturday, February 7th, in Asaba, Delta State, I attended a meeting with the ADC and the Obidient Movement. During the meeting, I emphasised the importance of coming together as one family to work towards a common goal: the creation of a united and new Nigeria that is achievable.
“In my remarks, I reminded everyone that Nigeria, today, is a nation that requires unity—from Sokoto to Borno, Nassarawa to Anambra, and Rivers to Lagos. We must unite for the shared purpose of establishing competent leadership that possesses the capacity, compassion, and commitment necessary to ensure good governance.
“This leadership must prioritise addressing pressing issues such as security, poverty, education, healthcare, and hunger.”
Also, the 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) called for transformation of politics in Nigeria from a “focus on transactions and rent-seeking” to the type that makes use of Nigeria’s resources to “create wealth” for all citizens.
A country where a “nobody” can attain “greatness” on his own without external help.
Obi said: “We must transform our politics from a focus on transactions and rent-seeking to one that utilises our nation’s resources to create wealth for all citizens. In this new Nigeria, a child of nobody can achieve greatness without the support of others.”
Obi joining the ADC
Peter Obi, who contested for the seat of President of Nigeria under the Labour Party in the Nigeria Presidential Election in 2023, dumped the Party following some internal problems that looked difficult to resolve.
One is leadership problem which struck the Party really hard to the extent of Obi and Alex Otti, Executive Governor of Abia State, running to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja for intervention on who leads the Party as it’s National Chairman.
The Leadership tussle of the ‘Mama, Papa and Pikin’ Party was between Senator Nenadi Usman and Barrister Julius Abure.
Obi left the Labour Party (LP) for the ADC, Coalition Party, in 2025. He alongside former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi; and other top politicians joined the ADC to fight against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 General Elections.
