Salah’s goal enough as 10-man Egypt reach knockouts with 1-0 win over South Africa

All of the second half, Egypt played against South Africa with ten (10) men, but, the Bafana Bafana were unable to strike out Liverpool forward, Mohamed Salah’s penalty.

The penalty by Salah was all the Pharoahs needed to scale through South Africa and make it two (2) victories out of two (2) at the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) 2025, winning by a lone goal on Friday 26 December, 2025.

In the 45th minute, Salah placed Egypt in front from the penalty spot before Mohammed Hany bagged his second yellow card and was sent off in the 2nd minute of the first half additional time, however, Egypt held on and carted all three (3) points to reach the knockout stage of the tournament.

In the first half, Egypt were the better side as the free-kick by Manchester City forward, Omar Marmoush, was bent wide of the left post from just outside the penalty area.

The Pharoahs were awarded the penalty after Khuliso Mudau struck Salah in the face as he tried to shield the ball from him in the penalty area.

The Egypt Skipper made no mistake from the penalty spot and placed his shot down the middle which left goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams feeble.

With six (6) points, Egypt are through to the next round of the tournament, while, South Africa have three (3) points from two (2) games and sit on the second position.

On the other side of Group B, Angola and Mozambique finished 1-1 on Friday.

Next, Egypt will face Angola on Monday 29 December, 2025 at 17:00 (WAT) while South Africa will lock horns with Mozambique.
