Dutch centre-back, Virgil Van Dijk, netted an additional time winner as Premier League club, Liverpool, overcame La Liga club, Atletico Madrid’s comeback to win 3-2 at Anfield on Wednesday 17 September, 2025.
Unbelievably, Arne Slot’s Liverpool have now found the back of the net in the 83rd minute or later in each of their last five clashes in this remarkable start to the season.
Andrew Robertson put the Reds in front in the 4th minute after deflecting Mohamed Salah’s early free-kick into the net.
Two (2) minutes later, Salah then added the second leaving Atletico Madrid manager, Diego Simeone, fuming on the touchline and the supporters settling down to watch some encouraging combination contribution by Alexander Isak and fellow new signing Florian Wirtz.
But, the Spanish visitors netted twice through midfielder, M, Marcos Llorente, in the 3rd minute of first half additional time, and 81st minute.
With Dominik Szoboszlai’s assist, Van Dijk scored the winner in the 2rd minute of additional time; one minute after the Reds winner, Simeone was shows a straight red.
