Kings of Germany, Bayern Munich, have announced defender Jonathan Tah is joining them on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.
The 29-year old Germany international has put pen to paper for a four-year contract with the Bundesliga champions, until 2029.
Tah featured for 10 seasons with Leverkusen, clinching the Bundesliga and German Cup double unbeaten during the 2023-24 season under manager Xabi Alonso, who joined Real Madrid on Sunday.
Xabi Alonso has moved to take over managerial duties at Spanish La Liga giants, Real Madrid, following the exit of Italian manager, Carlo Ancelotti, after the Los Blancos finished four (4) points behind Barcelona in the La Liga 2024/25.
Alonso’s was unveiled as Real Madrid new manager on Monday 26 May, 2025 by the Club’s President, Florentino Perez at Madrid City.
Tah who decided not to renew his Leverkusen contract was linked to a number of clubs including Premier League trio Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.
However, he has joined Vincent Kompany’s Bayern, who had former Spurs defender Eric Dier depart for Ligue 1 side Monaco earlier this month.
Tah said: “I’m very happy to be at Bayern.
“I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we’re successful as a team and win lots of trophies together.”
CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jonathan Tah to FC Bayern. As an experienced international and leader, he brings the consistency and quality that will strengthen our defence. He’s a real gain for us – and he’s also proven that he can win titles.”
Board member for Sport, Max Eberl, said: “It’s no secret that we’ve had Jonathan Tah on our radar for a long time. We appreciate his quality: he’s a character who takes on responsibility. Jonathan had a lot of offers but chose FC Bayern, which pleases us very much.”
Sporting Director, Christoph Freund, said: “In Jonathan Tah we’ve acquired a player with international experience and quality, who won’t need much time to establish himself in our defence. He’ll be a good and important addition for us with his technical qualities as well as his manner and the way he leads.”
