Raisi Helicopter Crash: Japan PM Kishida’s statement on passing of Iranian President

Prime Minister of Japan, Kishida, has released a statement on the passing of President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi.

Raisi alongside Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, with their entourage, died in a helicopter crash as they were returning from a meeting in Azerbaijan on Sunday 19 May, 2024.

Via the statement, the Japan PM expressed deep sadness following the emergence of the unfortunate incident, describing the relations between Japan and Iran as “friendly”.

Initially, it was announced by Iran state media that, the helicopter had a hard landing due to foggy conditions.

I am deeply saddened by the sudden passing of H.E. Ayatollah Seyyed Ebrahim RAISI, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Based on the long standing friendly relations between Japan and Iran, I have had a series of candid discussions with President Raisi on the bilateral relationship between Japan and Iran as well as the regional situation, through summit meetings and telephone talks.

On behalf of the Government and the people of Japan, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Government of Iran, the people of Iran and the bereaved family.
