Mr Johnson’s decision puts an end to his bid to return as Britain’s Prime Minister after he lost the job three months ago following a series of scandals.
This leaves his rival, Rishi Sunak, in a strong position to become the next leader of the country.
Boris Johnson, in a statement, said; “I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do.”
58-year old Johnson is of the belief that he could find it difficult to govern successfully without a unified Conservative Party in Parliament.
Party leaders threw their full support behind Mr Sunak as a better choice to try to bring unity into a disunited Party and push the chaos of the last few months away.
Mr Sunak officially declared his candidacy on Sunday, promising to “fix our economy”.
