Habib Chaab was a founder of a separatist group fighting for independence for ethnic Arabs in the south-western Khuzestan province of Iran.

Chaab had been living in Sweden in exile for ten (10) years when he was abducted by Iranian agents in Turkey in 2020.

Tobias Billstrom, Foreign Minister of Sweden, revealed his government had urged Iran not to execute Chaab.

He said: “The death penalty is an inhuman and irreversible punishment and Sweden, together with the rest of the EU, condemns its application under all circumstances.”
