Government officials alongside local officials and families attended the ceremony.

According to authorities, all were direct and indirect victims of the fighting, ranging from volunteered defence forces to unarmed civilians.

Safi Bahuma, a relative attending in memory of a brother, said: “The government must find a solution so that we can live in peace. We’ve suffered enough. We’re tired of burying.”

The M23 rebels have been waging a renewed insurgency in the vast central Congo’s militia-plagued east since 2022.
