Afcon 2027 Qualification: Nigeria come from behind to win 2-1 against Madagascar

Nigeria fought to come back and win 2-1 against Madagascar in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier on Friday 25 September, 2027 at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

Madagascar went in front through Ehsan Kari in the 16th minute; the defender beat the offside trap of the three-time Afcon Champions with a header from eight (8) yards out after a finely coordinated short corner routine.

The visitors’ lead immediately mounted pressure on the hosts for a large part of the first 45 minutes.

Nigeria levelled in the 1st minute of first half additional time through Saudi Professional League Club, Al-Ittihad, forward, George Ilenikhena. The 20-year old former AS Monaco player converted a through pass from Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi, to bring the home side level.

The Super Eagles fielded against The Barea without Galatasaray goal machine, Victor Osimhen, who is currently injured.

In the 65th minute, another debutant, Moses Usor, who came on from the bench, replacing Samuel Chukwueze, netted the winner to help Nigeria clinch victory in their Afcon qualification opener; it was a beautiful solo effort from the LASK winger.

Nigeria ensured to keep their game going, however, were not able to find more goals.

In the Group L, only Tanzania are through to the Afcon 2027 as they qualify as co-hosts of the tournament, while, Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau will fight to secure their spots.

Next for Nigeria and Madagascar?

Nigeria will face Guinea-Bissau in their next qualifier on Tuesday 29 September, 2026 at 17:00 (WAT) in Guinea-Bissau.

Earlier on Friday, Guinea-Bissau defeated Tanzania 2-0.

Madagascar will play against Tanzania in the Afcon qualifier same Tuesday at 14:00 (WAT) in Madagascar.
