Manchester United 4-0 Sabah: Carrick’s Reds cruise to victory in Champions League opener at Old Trafford

It was an easy win for Premier League side, Manchester United, in the League Phase match of the Uefa Champions League 2026/27 against Sabah at Old Trafford on Thursday 10 September, 2026.

The Azerbaijan Premier League side conceded four (4) times without reply as Michael Carrick’s Reds dominated the showdown all through in Manchester.

It was a winning return to the Champions League for Manchester United which they bagged in style.

Sabah, newcomers, kicked off the game brilliantly, however, it was the home side that went in front in the 27th minute through Brazili forward, Matheus Cunha, with an assist from Patrick Dorgu.

The visitors should have levelled through Rwandan winger, Joy-Lance Mickels, but, two goals late in the first half from Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko ensured United were in absolute control.

Fernandes made it two in the 42nd minute for the hosts after being found by an assist from Belgium midfielder, Youri Tielemans, who newly moved to the Theatre of Dreams from Aston Villa, and Sesko took an assist from Bryan Mbeumo to strike the back of Sabah’s net to make it three for Man United in the 45th minute.

After United had made changes in the second half to strengthen their dominance in the game, Argentine defender, Lisandro Martinez, splashed the icing on the cake with a 58th minute goal as the Reds carted all three (3) points.

The Argentina centre-back blasted home from close range after some shiny display from Dutch forward, Joshua Zirkzee, who made some beautiful cameo.

The game against Sabah is Manchester United’s first after more than 1,000 days absent from the Uefa Champions League.

Carrick’s focus will now shift to Manchester United’s Premier League clash against neighbours, Manchester City, on Sunday 13 September, 2026 at Old Trafford at 16:00 (WAT).

The Cityzens are toppers of the League with nine (9) points, while, the Reds are 11th with four (4) points, both after three (3) encounters.
