With two (2) goals in extra time, Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter final match at Kansas City Stadium in Kansas City, United States in the early hours of Sunday 12 July, 2026.
The game, which was dragged into extra time after Nottingham Forest winger, Dan Ndoye, levelled for the Red Crosses, had Julian Alvarez net a stunner that downed ten-man Switzerland and set up a semi final clash between Argentina and England.
It will be first competitive showdown between the White and Sky Blue and the Three Lions in more than two (2) decades.
Liverpool midfielder, Alexis Mac Allister, opened the scoring for Argentina early, in the 10th minute, with Lionel Messi’s assist; the goal came for the South Americans despite Switzerland’s beautiful start in Kansas City.
After being left unmarked, Mac Allister’s header found the back of the net from a cross launched by the Inter Miami forward.
Not long after the restart, the Red Crosses had the chance to level, but, Breel Embolo’s effort was met with a fine block from Manchester United defender, Lisandro Martinez.
But, in the 67th minute, left-back Ricardo Rodriguez provided for Ndoye, who levelled for Switzerland as the showdown ended 1-1 full time.
Prior to the leveller, the European side had forced Argentina goalkeeper to make saves following efforts from Ndoye and Granit Xhaka.
After a period of uninterrupted pressure, Ndoye and Rodriguez teamed up and the Tricky Trees winger levelled from a tight angle.
Five (5) minutes after Ndoye’s leveller, Switzerland were reduced to ten (10) players after Embolo bagged his second yellow card; the Rennes forward was sent off following a review by Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Argentina went in front again in the 112th minute through Atletico Madrid forward, Alvarez, from Flaco Lopez’s assist; and in 120+1′, Inter centre-forward, Lautaro Martinez, added the third for Argentina to end Switzerland’s World Cup 2026 campaign.
Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina will face Thomas Tuchel’s England in the semi finals on Wednesday 15 July, 2026 at Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta, United States (US) at 20:00 (WAT).
