Obi, Kwankwaso dump ADC, join NDC

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi; and former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have officially decamped from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The move described as a “bold step” on X by former Minister of Defence was made on Sunday 3 May, 2026.

Kwankwaso announced: “Yesterday, we took a bold and decisive step by formally joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).”

At Senator Seriake Dickson’s residence in Abuja, Kwankwaso said, the decision is coming from a “deep commitment” to the values of democracy.

He further said, he alongside other members are focused on making available a “credible platform” for our people to “thrive”; he urged Nigerians to join the NDC and fight for “good governance”.

Kwankwaso said: “We are determined to provide our people with a credible platform where they can thrive and realise their full potential.

“I therefore call on all our dedicated supporters and well-meaning Nigerians to join the NDC and stand with us in this renewed fight for good governance and true democracy.”

Obi, 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), joined the NDA after tendering his resignation from the ADC, which he joined in December, 2025.

He made it clear on X, he did not dump the ADC because he was “treated badly”, and that, he is not “desperate” to become the President of Nigeria.

However, the former Labour Party (LP) member said, he is “desperate” for a Nigeria where citizens “do not go to bed hungry”.

Obi posted: “Let me state clearly: my decision to leave the ADC is not because our highly respected Chairman, Senator David Mark, treated me badly, nor because my leader and elder brother, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, or any other respected leaders did anything personally wrong to me. I will continue to respect them.

“Let me assure all that I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President. I am desperate for a country where Nigerian citizens do not go to bed hungry, not knowing where their next meal will come from.”
