‘What are the Chinese and Indians seeing in Nigeria that we are not seeing?’ – Senator Sani

Senator Shehu Sani is perplexed that Chinese and Indians are “chasing greener pastures” in Nigeria while Nigerians are busy jetting out of the country to Europe and America in search of “greener pastures”.

This forced the Senator to ask on X, “What are they seeing that you are not seeing?”

He further asked, “What are you seeing that they are not seeing?”

Senator Sani wrote: “You chase for greener pastures in Europe, Canada and America but The Chinese, Indians and Lebanese are chasing for greener pastures in your country.

“What are they seeing that you are not seeing? What are you seeing that they are not seeing?.. How do they become richer and realise their dreams in your very country that you think is inhospitable and poor?”

Replies to Senator Sani:

@DGNaija wrote: “Dear Senator, you are either ignorant of the facts or deliberately ignoring reality, as is typical of many Nigerian politicians.

“Foreigners coming to Nigeria aren’t here because Nigeria is suddenly a paradise. They’re here because Nigeria is a high-risk, high-return environment with weak regulation, cheap labour, and a massive population.

“Most Chinese, Indians, and Lebanese who come here don’t start from scratch like the average Nigerian. They come with capital, family business networks, access to foreign credit, and supply chains already in place. That alone changes the game.”

@CollinsAsein wrote: “Inferiority complex: If a Chinese, Indian, Lebanese person, and I are working in the same place in Nigeria, they often earn higher pay and are treated like VIPs, while the police cannot harass them.”

@Merleek3 wrote: “This is totally fine. Most migrants are a self-selected group that pursue ‘novelty’, ambition, and risk-tolerance, which is why they often succeed wherever they go, whether Chinese in Nigeria or Nigerians in Canada. Ironically, the unifying trait is ‘chasing greener pastures’ with naive yet strong ambitions that become an asset, as they spark the curiosity of locals, making it better for those people to move.”

@Xpressbmx wrote: “The difference is perspective, positioning, and patience.

“Many locals see failure of government, insecurity, and hardship. so they look outward for stability.Foreigners see market gaps, cheap labor, raw demand, and high growth potential so they move inward to build.”

@CryptooSilva wrote: “It’s confusing how things are. We run there they run here. A kano man will go to lagos for greener pasture a man in lagos will run to abuja.”
