Manchester City 3-0 Liverpool: Guardiola clinch easy win in 1,000th game as Cityzens go second

Manchester City defeated defending champions, Liverpool, by a whopping three (3) goals to zero (0) in the Premier League 2025/26 match at Etihad Stadium on Sunday 9 November, 2025.

The demolition of Arne Slot’s Reds means Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens have moved up to second on the table.

Manchester City Striker, Erling Haaland’s early penalty in the 13th minute was saved by goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, but, the Norway international opened the scoring for the home side with a header in the 29th minute.

The visitors were unable to withstand the energy from the Cityzens as Jeremy Doku punished Liverpool’s defence for long periods.

Dutch Defender, Virgil Van Dijk’s leveller was struck out because Andrew Robertson had been in an offside position at the time, but, City made it two (2) when Nico Gonzalez netted in the 3rd minute of first half additional time.

In Pep Guardiola’s 1,000th game as a manager, Doku sealed the victory for the hosts with a beautiful strike in the 64th minute, converting Nico O’Reilly’s assist.

Doku’s goal shattered any hopes of Liverpool making a comeback in the showdown.

The three (3) points have helped Manchester City climb atop Chelsea and into the second spot, now only four points behind leaders Arsenal, who finished 2-2 against Sunderland on Saturday 8 November, 2025 at Stadium of Light.

Speaking to SkySports, in his post-defeat comments, Arne Slot said: “I think it’s obvious and clear that the wrong decision has been made, at least in my opinion. Because he [Robertson] didn’t interfere at all with what the goalkeeper could do.

“Immediately after the game someone showed me the goal that the same referee allowed City against Wolves last season [John Stones’ last-minute winner]. So it took the linesman 13 seconds to raise his flag to say it’s offside. So there was clearly communication.”
