League Two side, Grimsby Town, have sent Premier League side, Manchester United, out of the EFL Cup in the second round match on Wednesday 27 August, 2025.
After 2-2 draw, Grimsby went ahead to discomfit Ruben Amorim’s United 12-11 in penalty shootout to progress.
Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren had placed Grimsby Town ahead in the 22nd and 30th minutes before Reds substitute Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back in the 75th minute and defender, Harry Maguire, levelled in the 89th minute.
However, Matheus Cunha was unable to clinch victory in Manchester United’s last penalty kick of the regulation five, and Mbeumo’s lost his second penalty to gift Grimsby a 12-11 shootout victory which resulted to a pitch invasion from the happy home fans.

In his post-defeat comments to SkySports, United boss, Amorim, said: “It doesn’t matter if we recover [from 2-0 down] or not. It’s the signs the team made during the game. The beginning of the game.
“I know that the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose, because one team can win against any group of players.
“I think the team and the players spoke really loud today. That’s it. We lost. The best team won.”
Grimsby Town are through to the third round of the tournament.
