Well-known Ghanaian musician, Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr, AKA, Shatta Wale, has been detained in an investigation connected to his purchase of a luxury car, the Ghanaian authorities have said.
The yellow Lamborghini, purchased by the ‘On God’ singer, was seized earlier this month at the request of the United States (US), which alleged that the vehicle was linked to the proceeds of a criminal enterprise.
Ghanaian anti-crime Agency, Economic and Organised Crime Office (Eoco), revealed, the singer voluntarily entered custody on Wednesday and was subsequently interrogated over the car.
The musician’s management did not mention the US’ allegations in their statement, disclosing instead that the artist was detained over “tax obligations”.
EOCO said on Thursday, Lamborghini Urus, 2019 model, was identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and US Justice Department as being tied to “a $4m ($3m) crime involving one Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian who is currently serving jail in the USA”.
Wale has denied knowing or being linked to Amuah, who bagged a seven-year sentence for fraud in 2023.
