The announcement was made today at the COP 29 in Baku; the pledge makes Sweden “one of the largest donors to the Fund”.
Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs tweeted: “Sweden is, and will continue to be, one of the world’s most generous donors of international climate finance. At COP29 in Baku, Sweden is announcing increased climate aid to address the climate crisis.
“Sweden is allocating SEK 8 billion to the Green Climate Fund to support large-scale projects for green transition, emission reduction and adaptation to climate change – multi-year support for long-term change.
“SEK 200 million in support is being allocated to a new fund to help particularly vulnerable countries manage climate-related losses and damages.
“An additional SEK 260 million is financing climate adaptation projects and supporting the least-developed countries to strengthen their resilience against climate change.
“Through the ‘Early Warning Systems 4ALL’ UN initiative, Sweden is contributing SEK 20 million to strengthen extreme weather warning systems globally.
“Sweden urges more countries, and new donors, to increase their contributions to jointly mobilise the green transition in developing countries.”
COP 29 quoted Swedish MFA’s tweet and commented: “#COP29 Presidency welcomes Sweden’s pledge of $730 million to the
@UN Green Climate Fund, announced today at #COP29Azerbaijan, making the country one of the largest donors to the Fund. Such international support and commitments to #ClimateFinance are pivotal for global efforts and tangible action toward emissions reduction, collectively tackling #ClimateChange.
