The United States (US) and neighbours, Canada, have kicked off a “new relationship — based on respect, built on common interests.”
The announcement was made by Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, after his meeting with US President, Donald Trump, at the White House on Tuesday 6 May, 2025.
Mark Carney of the Liberal Party defeated Pierre Poilievre of the Conversative Party in the election which held on Monday 28 April, 2025; Carney is Canada’s 24th Prime Minister.
At his election victory speeech, the Canadian PM said, “Canada will never yield to Trump’s threat”, and urged Canadians to stay “united and strong” against Trump’s 25% tariff slammed on Canada.
Following his meeting with Trump at the White house, Mark Carney said: “Thank you to President Trump for inviting me to the White House.
“Our meeting today marks the beginning of a new relationship between Canada and the United States — based on respect, built on common interests, and to the transformational benefit of both our nations.”
