Christian Chukwu Passes At 74: He led Nigeria to its first AFCON title in 1980 – NOA

National Orientation Agency (NOA) mourns the demise of one of Nigeria’s football icons, Christian Chukwu.

Chukwu, a former player and coach passed on Saturday at the age of seventy-four (74).

NOA wrote: “Nigeria won its first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title on March 22, 1980, when they defeated Algeria 3-0 in the final held at the National Stadium in Lagos. This historic victory marked a significant moment for Nigerian football, bringing joy and pride to the nation.

“The team, led by captain Christian Chukwu, paraded an array of talented young men, then eager to bring honour to fatherland. To achieve that feat, Chukwu and his team prepared long and hard, showcasing resilience, hardwork and patriotism.

“For us in NOA, we mourn the demise of this icon who later became the coach of the National team. May his soul rest well.”
