Celebration turns Tragedy: Ten students involved in beach mishap, six rescued, one body recovered, search continues for three bodies

Some students decided to celebrate the successful completion of their Senior Secondary School National Examination Council of Nigeria (NECO) at the Elegushi Beach, in the Lekki area of Lagos State, however, an unfortunate incident occurred.

Ten students visited the beach, all were involved in the unfortunate incident at the beach, six were rescued and four were swept away.

The body of one of the four students who drowned at the Elegushi Beach, Lekki, Lagos, have been recovered on Tuesday.

Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman of the Police, confirmed the recovery of the body on Wednesday, and revealed efforts are still ongoing to recover the bodies of the remaining three students washed away by the huge waves of the beach.

A total of ten students of Kuramo Senior College, Lekki, Lagos, within the ages of 14 and 15 were having fun, swimming at the beach to celebrate the completion of their Senior Secondary School National Examination Council of Nigeria (NECO) when four of them were swept away.

Fortunately, six of the students were said to have been rescued by local divers.

Spokesperson for the Elegushi Beach Management, Chief Ayuba Elegushi, disclosed on Tuesday, that, the students were not registered properly.

According to him, the incident occurred at an unmanned section of the beach not open to the public.

In a statement obtained by The Punch, he said: “We initially sent them away from the area of the beach they wanted to swim in. Then, they went to another place that was not for the public at all. It was the child of our kinsman, Abass, who took them from school to the beach and those kids followed him.


“They did not pay any gate fee to access the beach. Abass used the leverage that he was one of us to take them through another place.”
