Queen Elizabeth II dies at 96: The Burial in details

The Burial of the longest-serving British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, will take place today, Monday 19 September 2022 at George VI Memorial Chapel.

Buckingham Palace has announced how the burial ceremony will take place in details.

Of course, her burial will bring about emotions and sadness, however, also a celebration of the life of the monarch and her 70-year reign.

Thousands are expected to line the streets of London and Windsor to pay their respects as she begins her final journey.

The Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal, says, the state funeral “unite people across the globe and resonate with people of all faiths” as well as pay a “fitting tribute to an extraordinary reign”.

What time will the Queen’s funeral begin?

  • Following several days of her coffin lying in state, the funeral of the Queen will be held at the Westminster Abbey in London, on Monday 19 September, 2022. Begins at 11:00am.

Where will it take place? And why?

  • Westminster Abbey in London. This is where she got married to Prince Philip 75 years ago and her coronation took place in 1953 here. This is the first funeral service for a monarch to take place at Westminster Abbey, breaking centuries of tradition, since the ceremony of King George II in 1760. However, the funerals for both Princess Diana and the Queen Mother took place here in 1997 and 2002 respectively. According to reports, it is believed, the Queen chose the venue herself as it can hold more people alongside the London location is more preferable to accommodate crowd.

Who will handle the funeral?

  • The very Reverend Dr David Hoyle Dean of Westminster will lead the funeral while the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury will preach the sermon.

Where will the Queen be laid to rest?

  • The Queen will be laid to rest at King George VI memorial chapel, a microscopic annex to the main chapel of Windsor – where her mother and father were laid to rest, also where the ashes of her sister, Princess Magaret, are kept.

Will she be laid to rest beside Prince Philip?

  • Prince Philip was temporarily buried in the Royal Vault at St George’s, however, will be moved to join the Queen at the memorial chapel.

The Journey of the Queen to Westminster Abbey?

  • On the funeral day, at 06:30am, after lying in state ends at Westminster Hall, the doors will be shut in preparation. The Queen’s coffin will be lifted shortly after 10:35am and carried in procession to the state gun carriage of the Royal Navy positioned outside the north door. At 10:44am, gun carriage will set off. On Parliament Square, a tri-service guard of Honour will take place followed by the band of the Royal Marines. At 10:52am, the procession will arrive and the coffin will be carried into the Abbey for the service.

The Ceremony Itself?

  • Heads of State and overseas government Representatives invited, encompassing foreign Royal dignitaries will travel jointly from the Royal Hospital Chelsea to the Abbey. Dean of Westminster and Prime Minister Liz Truss will conduct the funeral, Secretary General of the Commonwealth to read Lessons. Prayers will be said by the Archbishop of York, the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and the Free Churches Moderator. The sermon will be preached by the Archbishop of Canterbury, who will also give the commendation. The Blessing will then be pronounced by the Dean of  Westminster. The last pour will sound towards the conclusion of the ceremony at 11:55am, followed by a two-minute silence which will be observed in the Abbey and throughout the United Kingdom (UK). The National Anthem will be played and there will be a lament at the close of service at around mid-day. The King, the Queen Consort Camilla, and members of the Royal Family will follow the coffin out.

The Burial?

  • The Burial service will be private entirely, will take place at 07:30pm and conducted by the Dean of Windsor. The earth that will be scattered onto the coffin will have been gathered from the royal mausoleum located at Frogmore.
