Liverpool V Villarreal: Iraola pleads for ‘support’, gives injury updates ahead of Champions League clash

Spanish manager, Andoni Iraola, has called on fans to “support” Liverpool as the Reds play against Spanish La Liga side, Villarreal, in the Champions League match on Tuesday night.

He said, the Reds “need your support again tonight”.

Liverpool will face Villarreal in the League Phase match of the Uefa Champions League 2026/27 at Anfield, Liverpool on Tuesday 20 October, 2026 at 20:00 (WAT).

Iraola’s Reds will be heading into the game placed 5th on the Uefa Champions League table with six (6) points, while, Villarreal are 14th with three (3) points.

Also, the hosts will be facing their Spanish visitors after emerging victorious in their last two (2) games against LASK in the Champions League 6-3, and against Brentford 2-1. These victories are enough to boost their morale against the Yellow Submarine.

Dutch Captain and defender, Virgil Van Dijk, has called on his Liverpool teammates to “do everything” to ensure the “forward momentum is maintained” when they meet Villarreal in England.

In their pre-Villarreal comments:

Manager Iraola said: “We will need your support again tonight. If we can bring the same kind of desire – on and off the pitch – and stick together in the difficult moments then hopefully we can continue to push on.”

Defender Van Dijk said: “We arrive into this game on the back of two hard-fought wins away to LASK and Brentford, and it is important that we do everything we can to maintain that forward momentum this evening.”

In his injury updates on Jeremie Frimpong and Dominik Szoboszlai, Iraola said, the Dutch right-back suffered a “muscle injury”, and that, the team will have to be patient until he “recovers”.

While, Szoboszlai’s injury is “not new” and it has not “worsened”.

According to Liverpool official website, Iraola said: “I think they are different circumstances.

“Jeremie Frimpong is obviously a new muscle injury and it happened, I think, in the second or third minute he was playing, difficult to predict and we will have to wait until he recovers.

“Dom Szoboszlai is different. It’s not a new injury, I think it’s in the same place it was probably last week. He hasn’t worsened the injury but probably we have to be a little bit more patient until he recovers fully.”
