Artemis II astronauts splash down safely after journey around the moon

Four astronauts who went a journey around the moon have safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean after a perfect return.

The astronauts journeyed around the moon on NASA’s Artemis II mission.

The crew boarded a waiting ship and are recovering following a 9-day journey that took them around the moon, further from Planet Earth than any humans in history.

Their Orion Spacecraft was travelling at over 24,000mph (38,600km/h) when it reached the upper atmosphere of the Earth and its heat shield was exposed to temperatures half as hot as found on the surface of the Sun.

The safe return of the astronauts now paves the way for their next level of the Artemis Programme.

The Artemis Programme has the aim to land humans on the lunar surface, as well as, build a permanent base on the Moon.

The Capsule, which the astronauts labelled Integrity, suffered severe heat that led to losing contact with mission control in Houston for six minutes during the descent.

US President, Donald Trump, in his reaction on Truth Social to the safe return of the astronauts, extended his congratulations and said, he is “proud” and will be expecting the four at the White House soon.

The 47th US President said, the “next step” will be a journey to Planet Mars.

President Trump wrote: “Congratulations to the Great and Very Talented Crew of Artemis II. The entire trip was spectacular, the landing was perfect and, as President of the United States, I could not be more proud! I look forward to seeing you all at the White House soon.

“We’ll be doing it again and then, next step, Mars!”

The Mission’s moment of intense jeopardy has passed, and not long, the white and red parachutes of the spacecraft opened and sent the capsule sailing magnificently through the sky.

The astronauts – Pilot Victor Glover, Wiseman, mission specialist Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen – were extracted with care from the capsule and moved to the USS John P Murtha by helicopter.

The four astronauts will be evaluated medically at the USS John P Murtha.

NASA said, they will flown to Houston to reunite with their families on Saturday.
