Arsenal 1-2 Bournemouth: Gunners suffer huge blow to Premier League title race

AFC Bournemouth inflicted a massive blow on edgy Arsenal Premier League title hopes after blowing the race wide open with a 2-1 win in the top flight game on Saturday 11 April, 2026 at Emirates Stadium.

Gunners head coach, Mikel Arteta, who aimed at clinching a 12-point lead at the top of standings prior to the game by inviting fans to come with their “breakfast, lunch and dinner”, watched as the Cherries carted home all three (3) points.

The home side were lethargic and apprehensive with their performance even on home soil as they struggled against Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth.

The visitors went in front through Junior Kroupi in the 17th minute, but, Arsenal fought back and found the leveller through Sweden International, Viktor Gyökeres, from the penalty spot in the 35th minute.

The hosts were awarded the penalty kick after Ryan Christie blocked Gabriel Magalhaes’ shot with his hand.

In his quest to elevate the morale of his men, Arteta brought on Eberechi Eze, Leandro Trossard and Max Bowman, however, it was the Cherries who played towards clinching the winner.

And, in the 74th minute, Evanilson provided for Alex Scott, who sealed the victory for Bournemouth in North London; the goal ignited wild celebration among Cherries supporters inside the Emirates Stadium.

The dull performance from the Gunners forced boos from the home fans. Arsenal have finished the Premier League as runner-up for the past three (3) seasons.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City now have the chance to reduce the gap at the summit to just six (6) points when they slug it out with Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea on Sunday.

Manchester City will travel to Stamford Bridge for the Premier League match against Chelsea on Sunday 12 April, 2026 at 16:30 (WAT).

Next for Arteta’s Arsenal:

After three (3) successive domestic defests, Arteta’s Arsenal will now take a trip to Etihad Stadium for a Premier League showdown against Manchester City on Sunday 19 April, 2026 at 16:30 (WAT).

However, before the domestic game, the Gunners will welcome Sporting CP at Emirates Stadium for the Uefa Champions League 2025/26 quarter final second leg at 20:00 (WAT) on Wednesday 15 April, 2026.

Arsenal have an advantage over the Lisbon-based side after winning by a lone goal in the first leg in Portugal on Tuesday.

It has become doubtful now as to whether Arteta can successfully guide Arsenal to their first title after a whopping twenty-two (22) years following the shocking home loss to Bournemouth.
