US Supreme Court strikes down Trump’s sweeping tariffs

The Supreme Court of the United States (US) has struck down President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs and handing the Republican a piercing defeat in a landmark ruling on Friday with implications for the world economy.

Expressing satisfaction with the Supreme Court ruling on X, Nancy Pelosi, 52nd Speaker of the United States (US) House of Representatives, described Trump’s sweeping tariffs as “reckless”; she further described the tariffs as “costly” for the working families in America.

Reacting to the ruling on Truth Social, President Trump said, those Supreme Court members that voted against his administration’s “proper methods of tariffs” should be “ashamed of themselves”.

The US Leader said, he has other available options to pursue tariffs, and announced a 10% global tariff under a legal authority different from the one at issue in the case “over and above our normal tariffs already being charged.”

Pelosi said: “Trump’s sweeping tariffs were reckless, unconstitutional and costly for America’s working families.

“The Supreme Court rightfully struck them down, upholding the Constitution and rejecting an abuse of executive power that unlawfully taxed millions of Americans.

“The Court was clear. Tariffs cannot be enacted without the explicit authorization of Congress.”

The Justices upheld a decision by a lower court that US President’s use of this 1977 law outstripped his authority. The justices ruled that the law at issue – the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA – did not grant Trump the power he claimed to impose tariffs.

Trump described the decision as “ridiculous”, and said, he will “adjust” and do “everything possible” to make more money than his government was making before.

President Trump said: “Those members of the Supreme Court who voted against our very acceptable and proper method of TARIFFS should be ashamed of themselves.

“Their decision was ridiculous but, now the adjustment process begins, and we will do everything possible to take in even more money than we were taking in before!”

He said, the Trump administration will “raise” the worldwide tariff on Countries, especially on these countries that have been “”ripping”” America for so many years.

Further reacting to the Supreme Court “anti-American decision”, President Trump said on Truth Social: “Based on a complete review of the extraordinarily anti-American decision on Tariffs…please let this statement serve to represent that I, as President of the United States of America,

“will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been “ripping” the U.S. off for decades, without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level.
