England international, Harry Kane, found the back of the net twice and missed a penalty as Bayern Munich clinched their spot in the round of 16 of the Uefa Champions League 2025/26 after a 2-0 victory over Union St. Gilloise in the League Phase match at Allianz Arena on Wednesday 21 January, 2026.
The win means Vincent Kompany’s side are second on the table with eighteen (18) points after seven (7) encounters.
The reigning German Kings are three (3) behind Premier League side, Arsenal, who made light work of Serie A side, Inter, 3-1 in the League Phase clash on Tuesday night in Italy.
Union St. Gilloise, Champions of Belgium, are placed on the 31st spot on six points, two adrift of a place in the top 24 and a spot in the play-offs, with a match against Atalanta next week.
The Belgian side had been determined from kick off even through to the end of the first 45 minutes until Kane broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute after converting an assist from Michael Olise.
And three minutes later, Bayern Munich went two (2) goals in front after the English forward found the net from the penalty spot.
The home side’s penalty was won and converted by Kane as he netted his 35th goal in twenty-nine (29) appearances in all competitions.
Just few minutes after the hour mark, defender Kim Min-Jae was sent off after bagging his second yellow card; sadly, Union St. Gilloise were unable to use the loss of the South Korean center-back to their advantage to find their way back into the showdown.
The Bavarians were instead infuriated and almost netted a third as Kane missed his chance to net a hat-trick in the 81st minute after his penalty kick struck the bar; and Olise’s effort from six (6) yards went wide.
Bayern Munich have now remained unbeaten in their last thirty-eight (38) games at home in the Uefa Champions League Preliminaries.
The only defeat of the German Bundesliga 2024/25 Winners this season is a 3-1 loss to Arsenal in the Uefa Champions League 2025/26 match at Emirates Stadium in London.
Harry Kane’s statement after misfiring his penalty:
After losing his penalty, Kane said: “I tried to whip it fast into that far corner and just put a bit too much on it.
“I’m always learning. People just expect me to score penalties but that’s why I practise. I’ll probably learn more from that miss than the 10 I’ve scored this season already.
“Seeing it first hand, the way we train every day, the way the staff put in the hours behind the scenes. We’re all just one big unit. We’re pulling in the right direction.”
