Chelsea hustled back to return home with a point in the second half of the Premier League match against Newcastle United on Saturday 20 December, 2025 at St. James’ Park.
The visitors arrived at Newcastle with pressure on Italian head coach, Enzo Maresca, after a hard week for the former Leicester City boss.
The Magpies will be expectedly disappointed after Nick Woltemade’s first-half brace was not enough to bring home maximum points; it was the first time the German attacking midfielder netted double for the club.
Newcastle shared points with Chelsea on home soil after suffering a lone goal defeat in the hands of Sunderland, who gained promotion from the English second tier, Championship, last weekend.
Woltemade shot the hosts in front very early, in the 4th minute; after a fine effort from winger, Anthony Gordon, the Germany National Team player added the second in the 20th minute.
The first half ended without a response from Chelsea, but, a lifeline came from defender, Reece James, who found the back of the net with a free-kick from 30 yards; goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was helpless despite full stretch.
The Blues did not stop fighting and found the leveller through Joao Pedro in the 65th minute from Robert Sanchez’ assist.
The Blues, via X, sent Christmas greetings to lovers and supporters and said to return to action in a week’s time at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea wrote: “Safe journey home and Merry Christmas Blues.
“We’ll see you back at SB in a week’s time.”
Chelsea will face Unai Emery’s Aston Villa next on Saturday 27 December, 2025 at 18:30 (WAT).
Newcastle United, who will be gearing up for its next match on Boxing Day, wrote on X: “Thank you for your magnificent backing at St. James’ Park this afternoon
“Have a wonderful Christmas and we’ll see you at Old Trafford on Boxing Day”
Next, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle will face Manchester United at Old Trafford at 21:00 (WAT).
