English defender, Harry Maguire, shocked reigning Kings of England, Liverpool, as his 84th-minute header earned Manchester United’s first win at Anfield since 2016 and condemned the Reds to a fourth defeat back-to-back.
The defender guided in a cross from Portuguese midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, just six minutes after Cody Gakpo had struck out a controversial opening goal from Cameroonian forward, Bryan Mbeumo, only 62 seconds into a thrilling showdown.
Mbeumo, former Brentford player, opened the scoring for Ruben Amorim’s United early, converting Ivorian winger, Amad Diallo’s assist.
Argentine midfielder, Alexis MacAllister, sustained a head injury after colliding with defender teammate, Virgil van Dijk, and needed treatment but played on wearing protective headgear.
Mbeumo scored for the visitors in the 2nd minute, Gakpo levelled in the 78th minute, and Maguire netted the winner late, in the 84th minute, to hand Manchester United all crucial three (3) points of the encounter.
Egyptian forward, Mohamed Salah, who is currently struggling with form, missed two gilt-edged chances as Maguire’s winner ignited more jubilant celebrations from Manchester United.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who rallied to fight back, had their beautiful chance of an equalizer missed by Dutch forward, Gakpo, in the closing stages, heading wide from Jeremie Frimpong’s cross when it looked easier to find the back of the net.
This result makes it Liverpool’s fourth successive loss after having also been beaten by Chelsea, Galatasaray and Crystal Palace.
The stunning away win for Manchester United means they have clinched victory back-to-back in Premier League games for the first time in the Ruben Amorim era.
Liverpool are now fourth on the table with fifteen (15) points, trailing toppers, Arsenal, by four (4) points, while, Manchester United are 9th with thirteen (13) points.
On the other side, Aston Villa came from behind to beat Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Rodrigo Bentancur scored for the Spurs early, in the 5th minute, but, Unai Emery’s Villans hustled and levelled in the 37th minute through Morgan Rogers; and Emiliano Buendia sealed it up for the visitors in the 77th minute.
