Nigeria’s presence in 2026 World Cup ‘should be sacred’ – Obi send good wishes to Super Eagles ahead of South Africa qualifier

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, said, Nigeria featuring in the 2026 FIFA World Cup “should be sacred”.

Obi made the statement ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and South Africa in Bloemfontein.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Coalition member also congratulated the Super Eagles on their victory in the qualifier against Rwanda on Saturday.

Nigeria struggled really hard to clinch a narrow 1-0 triumph over Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria on Saturday 6 September, 2025.

The intense showdown had Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen, substituted early, in the 35th minute, after picking up an injury.

Nigeria’s crucial goal was scored by Wolverhampton Wanderers striker, Tolu Arokodare, in the 50th minute; the victory places Nigeria on the third spot of Group C table with ten (10) points, six (6) points trailing South Africa, who are leaders.

Obi wrote on X: “Congratulations to our dear Super Eagles on their crucial victory against Rwanda today.

“Watching the game, I noted your team’s commitment that should be sustained going forward.

“As you prepare to face South Africa on Tuesday in another very vital World Cup qualifier, Nigerians look forward to your continuous momentum.

“Nigeria playing in the World Cup final as one of Africa’s representatives should be sacred and Tuesday’s encounter will define it.

“We are confident that with this strength, Nigeria can make it to the World Cup.

“Congratulations and good luck.”

Nigeria and South Africa will slug it out in the World Cup qualifier on Tuesday 9 September, 2025 at Free State Stadium located in Bloemfontein, South Africa at 17:00 (WAT).
