Nigeria and China to work together to reduce poverty

Nigeria and China have expressed interest to collaborate in Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

Both countries expressed their interest when His Excellency, Yu Dunhai, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, visited the Minister of State Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu in Abuja on Thursday.

This was announced via a Press Release signed by Iliya Rhoda Ishaku, Director Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, on Thursday 4 September, 2025.

The Nigerian Minister said, “acute malnutrition in children, internally displaced persons” among other were areas where Nigeria face humanitarian challenges.

The Press Release reads: “The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have expressed interest to collaborate in Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

“The two countries expressed their intentions when the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency, Yu Dunhai paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of State Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu on Thursday, 4th September, 2025 in Abuja.

“The Minister while discussing potential areas of collaborations on poverty reduction and humanitarian affairs between Nigeria and China, acknowledged the good intentions of the Chinese government in partnering with the Ministry and expressed Nigeria’s eagerness to learn from China’s experiences. He highlighted the Humanitarian challenges in Nigeria which include acute malnutrition in children, internally displaced persons, refugees, climate change, among others.

“He stated areas of collaboration to include Durable Solutions, Partnering in Skill to Wealth Training Programs, capacity building for Ministry’s staff, particularly frontline workers, on poverty reduction and prompt response in humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations.

“The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency, Yu Dunhai, said both countries share a lot in common in terms of population saying China has about 1.4 billion people as of last year.

“He said China has suffered issues of hunger in times past but the country has achieved much in addressing the challenges. The Ambassador highlighted China’s experience in lifting millions of people out of poverty in the last decade and expressed his country’s willingness to share expertise with Nigeria.

“He said addressing poverty require comprehensive investment on food security, agriculture, industrialisation, education, security and developmental stability.

“The Ambassador assured that the Chinese Embassy is ready to partner the Ministry to achieve common goals.

“The Permanent Secretary Dr Yakubu Adam Kofarmata, thanked the Ambassador for the visit and the interest to partner with the Ministry in the area of humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction as well as capacity training for Staff of the Ministry.”
